Volunteer Activities, a Worthwhile PursuitGiving Back can Prove a Rewarding Experience
The reasons for volunteering are many and varied. It may be a chance to interact with people and have fun, to share a skill or to travel and experience other cultures.
Volunteering should be a positive experience for everyone, the person offering their services and the recipients. The best way to start is to contact a local volunteer organization. They will do an assessment of the volunteer’s interests and skills and match them to the appropriate group or program. Who Volunteers and Why?Many volunteers are retirees who have the time and experience to commit to a variety of activities. Many are also stay at home Moms or Dads who chose to help out at their children’s schools and organizations. It is important for volunteers to remember that although they are not committing to paid employment, a volunteer position is an obligation that should be taken seriously. Volunteers are required to be punctual and fulfill the duties they have chosen to undertake. One of the biggest advantages for the volunteer is having the freedom to decide how much or little time to devote to the volunteer activity. Community volunteering gives people an opportunity to share a passionate interest or hobby with others. People whose jobs may have been relating and helping others in one capacity may, upon retirement, decide to translate those skills into a volunteer position. Turning a hobby into a volunteer opportunity can be rewarding for everyone. Hobbies such as gardening, painting, crafts or playing a musical instrument can easily be translated into a volunteer program at a nursing home, daycare or a community centre. Many programs and activities within institutions and communities could not be run without the help of volunteers. These organizations recognize the value of Volunteers by hosting appreciation dinners and making presentations to volunteers to show how much their contributions are appreciated. Volunteer Travel OpportunitiesA lot of early retirees are taking advantage of volunteering travel opportunities. Unlike travel vacations spent in well-appointed resorts, volunteer travel in foreign countries provides an opportunity to interact with the daily lives of the citizens. Volunteering abroad often results in lasting friendships and life changing experiences. Many volunteers stay with host families in these countries allowing them to personally experience the lifestyle, food and languages of the locals. Many young people see volunteering overseas as an opportunity to learn a new language. Those who begin volunteering with low language skills will quickly be taught humility, creativity and patience as they attempt to express themselves in a new way. Besides learning new skills, students also have the opportunity to earn university credits through student internships while working or volunteering abroad. Benefits of Volunteer ActivitiesPeople who return from these volunteer adventures describe the rewards as personal satisfaction and an increased awareness of world problems. Many say they have become better people with more self- confidence and compassion. Volunteering may not be for everyone, but those who choose to participate agree, it is a win-win situation for all involved.
